It's absolutely terrific to enjoy vocation under a parasol at beach. But happiness always ends when the night's coming. What if you wanna extend the happy time till the night? Well, lighting could be a big problem. Now, designer Terry Chow and his team help solve such a problem.

Terry Chow encountered the same problem we discussed just now. He and his team combined a parasol with a 12V LED strip light to make a NI LED parasol for people who wanna continue their activities at night.

There is one OCT(one-touch dimmer) for each parasol, which makes users easily switch on or off, and control the light intensity. Considering that this LED parasol might be used at resort or restaurant, Terry also designs a remote control for the LED parasol.

Driving on Solar-powered LED Glass Road?

Could you imagine driving on glass road in future? This idea may sound crazy, but inventors are quite sure about it. They use a high-durability glass for road-paving which offers the same grip to vehicles as ordinary roads. Under the glass road, it will be equipped with LED lights, providing illumination for drivers at night.

Even more, the LED glass road could melt snow automatically because of its solar power system. The inventors said that the road is very eco-friendly. It's able to absorb solar energy.

China LED Lights: A Threat to South Korea LED Companies?

Now China LED lights, cheap in price but nice in quality, enjoy a hot-selling in many South Korea's shopping malls and supermarkets.


This situation triggers concerns of many Korean LED companies. Director from one LED lighting fixture company(Gyeonggi-do, Korea) said, the selling price of LED lights from small or medium manufacturers is about 7,000 won(about 42 RMB), while it costs less than 5,000 won to buy China LED lights in most giant supermarkets, like EMART and LOTTART. It's really hard for Korea small and medium companies to compete with such a low price.

It's reported that some China LED lights in Korea market are now 50% off for promotions. In this situation, many Korea domestic lighting products will probably be withdrew if they could not get out of this dilemma.

Besides, some Korea supermarkets even undersell China LED lights with their own labels. It not only increases the profit of Korea distribution companies, but also helps improve market occupation in Korea. However, this will be a great challenge for many small and medium companies. Moreover, except China products, many lighting products from other countries are entering Korea market. If no better countermeasure or strategy is carried out, these companies would probably collapse or go bankrupt in future.

Philips Canlyte Closes Cornwall Lighting Plant

Holland lighting giant Philips is closing its lighting fixture plant, Philip Canlyte in Cornwall. This plant, established in 1987, originates from Canlyte, brand of Canada lighting fixture company, Genlyte. After the acquisition of Philips in 2008, the plant's name was changed to Philips Canlyte.


Philps Canlyte will be officially closed in 2015, before which the plant will gradually stop production of incandescent lights, and LED light line will be handed over to other North America Plants.

It's said that about 190 Canlyte employees will lose their jobs. Philip's spokesman, Santina Giuliano, said employees were receiving details of their termination arrangements.

Philips Q1 Sales, Earnings Slip 2014

From wireless intelligent lighting system "hue" to the two well-known 3D-printed lighting products, Philips has been leading the lighting industry from traditional lighting to energy-efficient LED lighting.



On Apr. 22nd, 2014, Philips announced its first quarter(from January to March ) earnings report. The report shows that Philips' first quarter revenue reduced by 4.8% to 5.02 billion euros, EBITA reduced by 21.9% to €314 million, and net profit was down 15% to 137 million euros.

Sales of Philips Lighting sector in the first quarter reduced by 4.2% to 1.892 billion euros; EBITA slipped 6.1% to 138 million euros. LED product sales, increasing by 37%, accounts for 33% of Philips Lighting sector's sales, which is higher than last year, 23%.

LED Bulb Price Drops in March, 2014

LEDinside observed that 40W equivalent bulb price drops big in China, and 60W equivalent bulb price runs steady globally. In March, 2014, 40W equiv. LED bulb retail price declined globally by about 1.3% to $14.9. 60W equiv. LED bulbs retail price did not change too much, remaining at $20.8.



In March, 40W equiv. LED bulb retail price dropped by 14.7% in China, and the existing products' prices fell. Take 7W bulb(450-500LM) from one China manufacturer for example, the price reduced from $4.3 to about $2.9. Also, 5W bulb(450LM, 30,000h service life) this month, the price dropped to $4 from $12.3. In addition, the exchange rate rise also led to a price reduction. Besides, 40W equiv. LED bulb retail price the United States also showed a significant decline, 7.6%, in March. The existing products' prices basically showed a steady a downward trend; some commodity's prices dropped more obviously, such as price of 6W CREE dimmable bulb fell to $ 4.97 in some areas of the United States.

As to 60W equiv. LED bulb, the retail price in Japan showed a significant decline, dropping by 14.8% to $ 19.2, in March. Some high-price products are temporarily stop selling, such as Sharp 10.4W bulb. This bulb's original price is about $32.4. In the United Kingdom and Germany, there was a substantial rise of the price in March.  The prices of existing products increased comparatively higher. For example, Ledon 12W light bulb this month, the price rises from $20.8 to around $34.8 in Germany.

UAE Women Invent Intelligent lighting System for Haze Days

United Arab Emirates Today reported on April 11 that 3 UAE women engineers recently invented a new type of road intelligent lighting system to prevent haze-day traffic accidents.



These 3 women engineers all come from Fujairah, UAE. According to their vision, this intelligent lighting system will be installed on both sides of highway. The biggest advantage is that the system could automatically rate the haze, and the lights would power up for illumination accordingly.

Meanwhile, the system comes with a set of communication devices which will provide real-time traffic information to drivers, and also remind them to slow down. In addition, communication devices are connected with police department, keep the police well-informed of road visibility conditions, and reminding them to make contingency plans.

According to three inventor's estimation that the minimum cost of this lighting system is about 70,000 dirhams per 100 kilometers(about 118,000 RMB). However, they believe that if this system is put into use, it would 100% prevent traffic accidents in haze days.



Although the usefulness of this system needs a further study, Fujairah Transportation Department still commended their efforts and achievements. The 3 inventors are now applying for national patent for their invention; and they will continue to make improvements to the system.

At Gadget Show Live 2014, a product named "Commuter X4", a combination of wearable LED taillight and shoulder straps, won the second place of British Inventors Project.

LED Lighting Expected to Reach 40% Market Share in 2015

Due to the high energy prices and the impact of Japan's nuclear disaster over the past few years, people all around the world are once again aware of the importance of developing green energy. Although many manufactures have been committing to solar panel's production and improvement on energy efficiency for years, they still could not break the energy efficiency, which is 20%, bottleneck. In this case, people gradually shift their focus to energy saving LED. This trend formed in the second half of 2013, and is expected to step into a breaking growth of LED lighting in the next 3 years.



The first wave of LED industry originated from the financial tsunami at the end of 2008. Samsung released LED-backlit TVs and enjoyed an unexpectedly hot-selling at that time, which opened up to an 18-month growth of LED TVs. LED TV's penetration rate steadily increased, from 3% in 2009 to 38% in 2011. LED share prices enjoyed a globally high rise.

But a big change happened in 2011. Under the government's five-year plan policy, China manufactured a large number of MOCVD, which caused the price collapse of LED backlight; therefore, LED industry underwent a long-time frozen period and adjustment from the second half of 2011. This situation ended by the end of last year.

There are another 3 reasons for LED industry adjustment. First, heat dissipation of LED products remained to be solved at that time. Second, many manufactures who engaged in traditional bulb's production were reluctant to support LED lighting. Third, LED bulbs, for consumers in general, were too expensive to afford. Therefore, the expectation of LED lighting to replace traditional lighting in 2012 failed. This led to the adjustment period of LED industry from 2012 to the first half of 2013.

This frozen period is broke by U.S. company, CREE, in the second half of 2013. Cree officially stepped into U.S. lighting market in mid-2013, and promoted two energy-saving bulbs at a cheaper price, $9.97 40W LED bulb and $ 12.97 60W LED bulb. These affordable bulbs were well-received and initiated a good response in market.



In the second half of 2013, Cree sold over 8 million bulb units, three bulbs per unit. The company's profit was reflected in Cree last year's earnings report. Cree's lighting business accounted from 35% in 2012 to 42% in the fourth quarter of 2013, for the proportion of total revenue, enjoying a 42% annual revenue growth. Many large lighting manufacturers then followed up after Cree. It's expected that the LED lighting's market penetration rate will increase from 8% to 15%~20% in 2014, and the figure will probably reach 40% in 2015.

LED Light's Price in a Globally Steady Decline

According to the retail price survey on LED bulbs carried out by TrendForce, the retail price of LED bulbs used to replace 40 watt bulbs drops to $15.1 USD, about 0.8%, all around the world in Feb, 2014; the decline is relatively obvious in U.S. market. Also, the price of replacement LED bulbs for 60W, shows a similar decline, about 2.1%. It decreases to $20.8 USD.



In February this year, the price of 40W replacement LED bulb in U.S. market fell the most obviously. The average price fell 11%. 7W LED light bulb(luminous flux: 470lm) from Walmart's own brand, Great Value, only costs $8.48 USD; CREE dimmable LED bulb(6W, 450lm) is now $7.49 USD. Besides, prices of parts of Philips LED bulbs also undergo a decline.

As in China, the price for 40W replacement bulb decreases 1.9%. Samsung LED bulb(6.9W, 490lm)'s price drops from 19.5 USD to 12.5 USD while the warranty changes to 3-year.

As to 60W replacement bulbs, the price in everywhere shows a stable falling except United States; price there shows a 2.6% rise instead.The fact is parts of high-price items' return to market causes the rise of average prices. Take 13.5W bulb(luminous flux: 800lm) from Lighting Science for example. It was temporarily stopped selling; but now it returns with a new price 20.6 USD.

The price declines globally; meanwhile, LEDinside observes that many brand companies are now pursuing to improve bulb performance. Currently in North American market, 90% of brand bulbs are designed with dimming function, and 70% are bulbs with large light-emitting angle. Moreover, smart control function becomes one important part of many manufacturers's R&D work. Philips releases Hue bulb in China market; Samsung also announces the launch of a new smart LED light bulb which has built-in Bluetooth, and the brightness and color temperature could be controlled via a smartphone or tablet.



LEDinside believes that the improvement on cost-effectiveness will enhance and accelerate the integration of regional markets, and smart lighting will also become one of the major trends for lighting products.

U.S.Energy Information Administration predicts that the price of LED light is almost close to that of fluorescent light or incandescent light by 2020. At that time, incandescent lights are probably eliminated as they could not meet the energy-saving standards in next few years.



On January 1, 2014, the United States banned the production and sales of 40 watt and 60 watt incandescent bulbs; but many American families store a number of these traditional bulbs before the ban. Probably, 75 watt and 100 watt traditional light bulbs would also become one part of the ban.

Due to the the federal standards and development on lighting technology, the bulbs' quality sees a great improvement; the service life and lighting efficiency also increase a lot accordingly. Thus, although people may spend more on buying LED light bulbs, LED bulbs would save more on electricity cost than transitional bulbs.

Nevertheless, the majority of American families still believe that the price of LED bulbs is much higher than 40 watt or 60 watt incandescent bulbs; they would rather buy fluorescent bulbs than LED bulbs. But as the prediction of U.S. Energy Information Administration, this situation would change in 2020 as the price of LED bulb would be very close to that of incandescent bulbs.

U.S. Energy Information Administration also believes that LED bulb's efficiency will reach more than 150 lumens per watt in 2020, which is 10 times higher compared to that of traditional incandescent. In addition, LED bulb's service life is up to 30 years, which might change people's point of view on lighting product selection.



From now to 2020, halogen incandescent lighting is still applicable to general lighting purposes. But after 2020, it might have to face the same fate as fluorescent bulb's.

As to the development of lighting technology and the decreasing cost, LED bulbs would be very likely to replace traditional lighting in U.S. in 2025. LED lighting would become a trend.

Do's N' Don'ts with LED Display

LED display is popular for indoor and outdoor display applications. To get the most out of your LED display, I put together this simple list of do's and don'ts for using. It's simple yet quite informative.



1. Do start PC before switching on display screen; and shut the PC off after switching off the display. If you do it in a wrong way, it will cause a serious failure in display and LEDs.

2. Make sure that the interval between switching on and off the display is over 5 minutes.

3. Better to power up the LED display after you access the project control software in computer.

4. Do not start up LED display when it's all white in screen, because the current impact to the system reaches the maximum.

5. Do not start up LED display if the controlling section is not power on.

6. Do not use the display for a long time if the ambient temperature is too high or against heat dissipation.

7. Do shut off the display screen if one part of it appears very bright.

8. Do check the display or replace power switch if the display trips off quite off.

9. Do regularly check on connection parts, and make necessary adjustment or repair work if there is any problem.



10. Do necessary protection work to avoid the display from buds or mice.

11. Do clean the display before and after installation. This would help to prevent from any blurring, mosaic, or blank screen in use.

12. Do use professional cleaning liquid to clean LED modules.

13. Do clean the display after using a period of time. This would help to extend its service life. You could use clean water or water with washing liquid for cleaning work. But do note that this work is only suitable for front display, but not the LED modules at rear.

How to Select High Quality LED Displays?

If you're going to buy LED displays, you'd better check the following information for reference.




1. Flatness.

LED display's surface flatness should be within ±1mm so as that the displayed image is not distorted. A partially-raised section or other types of unflatness would cause a viewing angle problem. Flatness is mainly determined by the quality of production process.

2. Brightness and View Angle.

Proper brightness is a key factor to LED displays' performance. The brightness of indoor full-color LED display is about 800~2000cd/m2, and outdoor full-color displays' brightness is 5000~7500cd/m2. A higher or lower brightness over an actual need would lead to invisibility. Screen brightness is determined by the size of LED chips.

View angle directly affects how many audience the display is good for; thus, in a certain circumstance, the larger the view angle, the better the LED display.

3. White Balance Effect.

White balance effect is one of the most important indicators in LED display's selection. In fact, a certain proportion of red, green and blue primary, 1:4.6:0.16, mixed together would show a pure white. Any deviation of the proportion will lead to a bad white balance. Please also be attention whether there is bluish or yeallowish light in white.

4. Color Lump and Chromatic Aberration.

Color lump or chromatic aberration means there is an obvious color difference between adjacent display modules. It's mainly caused by a bad control system.

5. Color Authenticity.

Color authenticity refers to an authentic display for the display source. The color displayed should be as consistent as the source's so as to achieve a real effect.

6. Mosaic or Defective Pixel.

Mosaic refers to an uneven color displayed in module unit. This problem usually comes from bad display connectors which causes a failure of display module. Defective pixel refers to continuous bright points or dark points on screen. Display with defective pixel usually means a bad quality of LED chips.

Before you carry out a big purchase for LED display screen, you'd better check the following information first.




1. Brightness.

Generally, brightness varies in accordance with different applications.
A. Brightness for indoor use> 800CD/M2
B. Brightness for semi-indoor:> 2000CD/M2
C. Brightness for outdoor use(display screen faces north):> 4000CD/M2
D. Brightness for outdoor use(display screen faces south):> 8000CD/M2

The brightness of red, green and blue light contribute differently in composition of white light. Here a are some data and specifications for you reference. Generally brightness ratio for these 3 colors is 3:6:1. Precise ratio is 3.0:5.9:1.1.

With a certain brightness and pixel density, the calculation for a single-tube's brightness would be as follows.
Take two red light, one green, and one blue light for example.
Red LED light's would be: Brightness (CD) / M2 ÷ Pixels / M2 × 0.3 ÷ 2
Green LED light's brightness: brightness(CD)/ M2 ÷ Pixels / M2 × 0.6
Blue LED light's brightness: brightness(CD)/ M2 ÷ Pixels / M2 × 0.1

Suppose the density is 2500/sqm, 2 Red, 1 Green 1 Blue, and the brightness requirement is 5000CD/M2 per square meter, then:
Red LED brightness: 5000÷2500×0.3÷2=0.3
Green LED brightness: 5000÷2500×0.6=1.2
Blue LED brightness: 5000÷2500×0.1=0.2
Brightness of each pixel would be: 0.3×2+1.2+0.2=2.0 CD

2. Size.

Do check the following points first before you make a decision.
A. Relationship between effective visibility range and the size of LED display;
B. Pixel and resolution;
C. Area estimation;
D. Installation and operating space for maintenance ;
E. Obliquity's impact on distance.

3. Display Effect

A. Text Display: The display effect depends on character's size depending and resolution requirements;
B. Video Display: 320×240 matrix;
C. digital standard DVD display: ≥640×480 matrix;
D. Complete PC Video: ≥800×600 matrix.

4. Size Design factors

A. Display contents;
B. Space and area factor for a certain application;
C. Display unit size (for indoor screen) or pixel( for outdoor screen).

Screen for graphic: determined by the contents;
Screen for video: generally 4:3 or close to 4:3;
Ideal screen ratio: 16:9.




5. Power Consumption & Power Supply

The power consumption of display screen is divided into average power consumption and maximum power consumption. Average power consumption, also known as working power, refers to an actual power consumption in use. Maximum power consumption means the consumption when the screen is started or in a full operation. It's must be considered if you use AC power supply. Usually, average power consumption is about 1/3 of maximum power consumption.

6. LED Key Indicators

A. Maximum output current. Currently, the maximum output current of a constant-current LED drive chip is about 90mA.

B. Constant-current output channels.
There are 2 types of constant current output channels, 8-channel and 16-channel. The latter one is the most common in use. It reduces the chip size, and makes it easier for LED drive board (PCB) layout.

C. Accurate current output.
Accurate current output is a very critical factor which has a great impact on LED display. The greater the error, the bad the screen's display effect. Bittobit current error of a constant current chip is typically within ±3%, and chiptochip current error is within ±6%.

D. Data shift cycle.
It determines the data's transfer speed of led display screen. It is also a key indicator for the display's update rate. As a large-size display device, the update rate should be 85Hz or more, therefore ensuring display stability(no flashes). The data shift cycle of a constant current drive chip ranges from 15MHz to 25MHz or more.

2. Long service life. LED's service life is up to 100,000 hours (about ten years) or more. This specification refers to the design life of LED.

3. Large view angle. Indoor LED display's view angle could reach 160 degrees or more; and outdoor LED display's view angle is over 120 degrees. The view angle is determined by the shape of light-emitting diode.

4. LED displays vary from each other in size. There is 1 square meter display as well as displays of hundreds or thousands of square meters.

5. It's easy to connect LED display with computer. The display supports numbers of software.

Installation of LED Display

Installation of led display determines the display effect in use. Generally, there're 5 ways for LED display installation.

1. Embedding
This installation way is good for installing small indoor LED display screen. In order not to occupy too much space, you could dig out an area, which is the same size as the display screen, in the wall, and embed it into it. Be sure you do it on a solid wall. Besides, this installation way cost a higher fee on maintenance.

2. Hanging

3. Wall-mounting

LED Display's Classification

1. Classification by Application.


LED display could be used for indoor, outdoor or semi-outdoor applications.

Synchronization means that LED display works basically like a computer monitor. The display screen updates pictures at a rate of at least 30 fields/sec.

Asynchronous refers that LED display screen has storage and auto-play function. You could edit text content and images with PC, and upload to LED screen via the serial interface or other network; then the display would play offline automatically. This kinds of display is generally used for displaying text information.
