How to Choose and Buy LED Strip Lights? Buying Guide

If you have no idea on how to choose and buy LED strip lights, you should check the following buying guide information. Before you make a decision, you'd better think more.




1. Chips
Chips of LED strip lights include domestic ones, Taiwan-made chips, as well as imported chips(including chips from U.S., Japan, Germany, etc.). Different chips are labeled with different prices. The most expensive chips come from U.S., which is followed by Japan's and Germany's. Taiwan-made chips are affordable for many manufacturers.

2. Sealing
There're 2 types of sealing, resin sealing and silicone sealing. The resin one is cheaper, but the thermal performance is a bit weak. The silicone one has good thermal performance while the price is more expensive.

3. LED Color Consistency
Though currently there are a lot of packaging factory, but most of small packaging plants have no color separation machine. Thus it is difficult to control the quality. Without spectral separation of the LED, the color consistency would be poor. The light effect of LED strips is not so good. of course. the price difference will be relatively large.

4. Soldering Effect
There're 2 types of soldering, manual soldering and machine soldering. The later is much better than the former one because the soldering quality is much better. A good soldering ensures a good protection of chips from burning out.

5. Certification
You'd better check whether the FPC is certified with environmental certification, or UL certification. Also please check whether the manufacturers have LED patents. LED strip lights with certification or patents are more expensive.

6. Brightness
Different prices for different LED brightness. Purchaser must be clear the difference before they make a decision.

7. Colors
Because it's more difficult to do color separation process of white strip, and green strip, the price of these color strip lights are relatively high. Stip lights in red, yellow, blue and other colors are cheaper. Lights with special colors, such as purple, or brown, are most expensive.



8. Size and Specification
The prices can be different due to different sizes and specification. For example, the price of 0603 LED strips is different from that of 1210. The prices of 1210 and 5050 also differ from each other.

9. Surface Cleanliness
The surface of strip lights, which are produced with SMT technology, is much cleaner. But the one produced with manual soldering can be found with traces of stains and cleaning. Also there remains flux and tin slag on FPC surface.

10. Packaging
Normally, LED strip lights, usually 5m or 10m in a roll roll, will be packed with anti-static packaging trays, and moisture-proof outer package. Some manufacturer would not use the package tray or waterproof package for cost-saving purpose; thus lights from these manufacturers are cheaper, but the quality is not as good as the other's.

11. Label
There is a printed label mark, instead of extra paper printing labels, on lights' package. Specifications and parameters of poor quality strip lights could not match the product's itself.

12. Accessories
Usually, LED strip lights will be sold accompanied with user instructions, specifications, and connectors or deck. If not, you'd better check the light quality once more.

Why LED Strip Light Won't Light Up? Troubleshooting

Today we'll answer the frequently asked question. "why LED strip light won't light up". If you find your flexible LED strip light won't light up or power up, you may check the following troubleshooting information for help.



1. The lamp beads of led strip light must be broken or damaged during transportation if the light is not covered with full protection.

2. There must be a faulty at the light's soldering points. The soldering may come off if there is any shock during transportation.

3. Soldering with poor quality may cause embrittlement or shedding when the strip light is bent for use.

4. Cheat on tin soldering materials can also cause the same problem as the 2 point we just mentioned.

5. LED lights with flexible installation bending angle is too large, resulting in LED lights with flexible joints and lead to bright copper separation

6. A excessive bending may result in the disconnection between the joints and copper foil.

7. Thick solder layer on strip light's circuit board lead to a non-complete fusion of the soldering and the circuit board.

8. LED Flexible Strip light can not be twisted during installation. The soldering may come off by a twisting.

9. Electrostatic failure. LED is an electrostatic-sensitive component. If there is no good ESD protection measures for LED, the chip will burn out.

How to Install LED Strip Lights?

Many people have the problem with the strip light installation. Here, we'll show you how to install LED strip lights.




Guidance on Indoor Installation
It's very easy to install LED strip lights for indoor decoration. There is a type of LED strip at the back of which there's self-adhesive double-sided tapes. You can install the lights at any place you need by tearing off the double-sided tapes at the back and press it for fixation. What if there is a corner or the strip light is longer than needed?  It's a good question. Before we answer the question, you should be clear that every 3 LED of LED strip light is connected in series-parallel way. Thus you can cut the strip light at the place of every 3 LED.

Guidance on Outdoor Installation
As to outdoor installation, led strips with double-sided tape at back are not practical for use. If you use this type of strip light for outdoor application, the light will easily fall off for the adhesion would decrease due to the changing weather. So you need to use a installation slot for fixing LED strips. Then the following installation steps are the same as that of indoor installation. But you need to apply some water-proof glue to reinforce the connection points.

Power Connection
The general voltage for strip light use is DC 12V; thus we need use switching power supply. The power should be decided according to the power of LED strip and the connection length. If you do not want use power supply for each LED strip, you can use a bigger power supply as the main power switch, and then make all the LED lights in parallel. The whole circuit's power is supplied by the main switching power supply. The benefit is you can control the whole lighting by one power supply; while the disadvantage is you can not control the lighting effect and power control of each LED strip.

Controller Connection
We need a controller to control the changing effect of LED marquee strips and LED RGB strips. Usually, the distance of each controller is different from one another. The controlling distance of a simple controller is about 10 to 15 meters; the remote controller's reaches to about 15 to 20 meters. The longest one is up to 30 meters. If the connection distance is out of the controller's controlling distance, then you need to use a power amplifier to solve the problem.

Generally, the connection distance of 3528 LED strip lights is up to 20 meters; and that of 5050 LED strips is about 15 meters. If the distance beyond this connection distance, the LED strips will become hot very easily. This will affect the service life of lights. Therefore, we should install the strip lights in accordance with the manufacturer's guidance.

People has different ideas and favorites on color selection. Here are my advices. Generally, you'd better choose light colors, like white, for your ceiling decoration. According to room usage, yellow or blue is most common used for living room. Yellow light shows a sweet and nature mood, especially in a freezing cold winter days. Blue makes your room looks higher and deeper. If you love warm colors, red is also a nice choice. If you use double strips in red and blue, it turns out a romantic effect. Yellow is always the right choice for restaurant, study room and children room. It's better to use one color strip in one single room.

You'd better to make a decision on colors and length before you buy any types of led strip lights. This will help to save you more money.

The price of LED strip is counted by length. Every 1 or 2 meters is a unit. So please pay attention when measuring the length of strips. Also please be sure to have a mark on strip for accuracy cut.

Led strip light consumes little electricity, about 3-5W / m, so it's much more energy efficient than T4 or T5 lamps. Besides, it can apply to different ceiling shapes.

Finally, round LED strip is not as bright as flat one. But it's cheaper. You should consider it during selection.

How to DIY LED Home Light?

Although LED lights have many advantages in many applications, it's still a little expensive for home use. Today, I'll going to tell you how to DIY LED home light. This DIY idea comes from a college student. I'll show you how he did it by himself.

DIY Process
"Make sure that the installation side of circuit board faces up, and the LED polarity is in right places. Attention, the long-legged part is positive while the short one is negative. The soldering work can be started after the installation of LED circuit board. Make sure that the soldering side faces up before soldering. A 30W soldering iron is suggested and the earth wire should be connected.Trim the pin. Then the light board assembly is completed. After that, put the light board into the light cup, and stick some glue to it. We'd better seal the light with a circular flat glass so that the outside have no contact with the internal wiring, which is safe for use.

What's LED Lighting?
